PRAYER

Our Relationship With God

PRAYER

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”    Matthew 7:7

Brother Lawrence was a simple monk whose prayer life was revealed to the world through the book The Practice of the Presence of God.  This book showed that prayer happened all throughout his day in the simplest tasks.

...his prayer was nothing else but a sense of the presence of God, his soul being at that time insensible to everything but divine love; and that when the appointed times of prayer were past, he found no difference, because he still continued with God, praising and blessing Him with all his might, so that he passed his life in continual joy.

(Brother Lawrence) I consider myself as the most wretched of men, full of sores and corruption, and who has committed all sorts of crimes against his King.  Touched with a sensible regret, I confess to Him all my wickedness, I ask His forgiveness, I abandon myself in His hands that He may do what He pleases with me.  The King, full of mercy and goodness, very far from chastising me, embraces me with love, makes me eat at His table, serves me with His own hands, gives me the key of His treasures; He converses and delights Himself with me incessantly, in a thousand and a thousand ways, and treats me in all respects as His favorite.  It is thus I consider myself from time to time in His holy presence.

At any moment and in any circumstance, the soul that seeks God may find Him, and practice the presence of God.

Why is it that I think I must get somewhere, assume some position, be gathered together, or separated apart in the quiet time of my study to pray?  Why is it that I feel I have to go somewhere or do some particular act to find you, reach you, and talk with you?  Your presence is here.  In the city, on the busy bus, in the factory, in the cockpit of the airplane, in the hospital, in the patients’ rooms, in the intensive care unit, in the waiting room; in the home, at dinner, in the bedroom, in the family room, at my workbench, in the car, in the parking lot, at the stoplight.  Lord, reveal your presence to me everywhere, and help me become aware of your presence each moment of the day.  May your presence fill the non-answers, empty glances, and lonely times of my life.

HMMM {QUESTIONS}

  • What is challenging about prayer for you?  How do you (if at all) experience prayer on a regular basis?
  • What can you do to establish a routine of talking with God throughout the day?  What can you do to help each other develop a life of prayer?
  • How will you apply the truths in this topic to your life this week?  Be specific.

Additional Quotes

The purpose of prayer is to keep you connected, and when you're connected to God, you are moving with Him.  Prayer that connects you to God positions you to seize divine moments.  This kind of prayer gives you the courage to live the life of an adventurer.  Prayer should move you, not paralyze you.  And when you pray with intent to obey, you become a magnet who draws others into God's presence.  You can choose to establish a monument for prayer or pray to unleash a movement.  One is religious; the other revolutionary.  Erwin McManus-Chasing Daylight

  • Psalm 119:9-32

    Psalm 119:9-32

    How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word. With all my heart I have sought You; do not let me wander from Your commandments. Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You. Blessed are You, O Lord; teach me Your statutes. With my lips I have told of all the ordinances of Your mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, as much as in all riches. I will meditate on Your precepts and regard Your ways. I shall delight in Your statutes; I shall not forget Your word. Deal bountifully with Your servant, that I may live and keep Your word. Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things from Your law. I am a stranger in the earth; do not hide Your commandments from me. My soul is crushed with longing after Your ordinances at all times. You rebuke the arrogant, the cursed, who wander from Your commandments. Take away reproach and contempt from me, for I observe Your testimonies. Even though princes sit and talk against me, your servant meditates on Your statutes. Your testimonies also are my delight; they are my counselors. My soul cleaves to the dust; revive me according to Your word. I have told of my ways, and You have answered me; teach me Your statutes. Make me understand the way of Your precepts, so I will meditate on Your wonders. My soul weeps because of grief; strengthen me according to Your word. Remove the false way from me, and graciously grant me Your law. I have chosen the faithful way; I have placed Your ordinances before me. I cling to Your testimonies; O Lord, do not put me to shame! I shall run the way of Your commandments, for You will enlarge my heart.

    “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!”

I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs. So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. "I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples."
