Our Relationship With God

And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’  This is the great and foremost commandment.”      Matthew 22:37-38

Probably the most widespread and persistent problem to be found among Christians is the problem of retarded spiritual progress.  Why, after years of Christian profession, do many persons find themselves no farther along than when they first believed?...A thousand distractions would woo us away from thoughts of God, but if we are wise we will sternly put them from us and make room for the King and take time to entertain Him.  Some things may be neglected with but little loss to spiritual life, but to neglect communion with God is to hurt ourselves where we cannot afford it.  God will respond to our efforts to know Him.

It is most important to our spiritual welfare that we hold in our minds always a right conception of God.  If we think of Him as cold and exacting we shall find it impossible to love Him, and our lives will be ridden with fear.  If, again, we hold Him to be kind and understanding our whole inner life will mirror that idea.  The truth is that God is the most winsome of all beings and His service one of unspeakable pleasure…

…The fellowship of God is delightful beyond all telling.  He communes with His redeemed ones in an easy, uninhibited fellowship that is restful and healing to the soul.  He is not sensitive nor selfish nor temperamental.  What he is today we shall find him tomorrow and the next day and the next year.  He is not hard to please, though he may be hard to satisfy.  He expects of us only what He himself has first supplied.  He is quick to mark every simple effort to please Him, and just as quick to overlook imperfections when He knows we meant to do His will.  He loves us for ourselves and values our love more than galaxies of new created worlds…

…How good it would be if we could learn that God is easy to live with.  He remembers our frame and knows that we are dust.  He may sometimes chasten us it is true, but even this He does with a tender smile of a Father who is bursting with pleasure over an imperfect but promising son who is coming every day to look more and more like the One whose child he is…

…We please Him most not by frantically trying to make ourselves good, but by throwing ourselves into His arms with all our imperfections, and believing that He understands everything and loves us still.

What a joy to be fully known and fully loved at the same time!  It is the joy of belonging through Jesus to God and being there, fully slave and fully free.

To just read the Bible, attend church, and avoid "big" sins--is this passionate, wholehearted love for God?

"I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, he prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned. if you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples."
